Week 1-2 Personal Blog Reflection

1.  During week 1-2 micro session I learned about behaviorism in great detail.  The readings were very informative and the videos gave me a clear visual understanding of the subject.

2. What is 'learning' from the behaviorist perspective?
'Learning' from the behaviorist perspective focuses attention on visible behavior and manipulating the behavior over time to create a desired outcome.  For behaviorist theorist B.F. Skinner, his learning perspective is coined by the term operant conditioning.  Operant conditioning focuses on observing the consequences of a behavior and how those consequences affect the behavior over time.  Learning occurs under conditions of positive and negative reinforcement or reward (increase desired behavior) or positive and negative punishment (weakens undesired behavior).  These processes create a source of motivation for the subject to learn a type of behavior.

3.  What are the big things that you learned about behaviorism? The big things I learned about behaviorism was the different types of operant conditioning situations.  Also,  studying theorist B.F. Skinner's rat experiment helped me to grasp the concepts being explained in the text.

4.  Do you think behaviorism demonstrates your own beliefs in how human learning occurs well? If so/not, why?I think on a basic level behaviorism does demonstrate my own beliefs in the human learning process.  For educational implications, I think behaviorism has the power to influence student behavior in the classroom.  While, on the other hand, behaviorism may not always work for all human learning because human behavior is psychologically very complex.

5.  Do you have any question or concerns about course learning?
My question I developed this week is: is it required to comment on other students reflection blogs in addition to the discussion forum?

  1. Hi Marissa,

I really liked how you explained learning from the behaviorist perspective. You mentioned how this perspective focuses on “visible” behavior, which is important to note because unlike other perspectives, behaviorism only focuses on behaviors you can observe.
Also, I completely agree with you that behaviorism has applications to the classroom, but it may not always work for learning. I said the same thing in my reflection! There are so many factors that influence student learning that one perspective isn’t enough.
    Thanks for sharing your ideas!

  2. Hi Marissa,

You were not required to provide feedback during the first week, but, as you might have noticed now, the social blog activity -providing feedback comments in others' blogs- starts from week 2-1 module. Please visit two peers' blogs and give feedback on their blog reflection!

  3. Hi Marissa,
I really enjoyed reading your post for Week 1-2. It is interesting to see your take on behaviorism and its benefits. I agree with your point that behaviorism can be beneficial in the classroom, but it may not work for everyone. It is important to recognize that not all learning theories work the same for everyone, and I think you recognize that.
